I'm telling my clients these days that content is marketing and marketing is content. Over 80% of people considering the purchase of a product or service either carry out initial research on the web, or they use search to validate what they've heard from others, and compare with other options. In that context, the content they see when they visit a site will determine the credibility of that company. The more content rich a site is, the more helpful and informative it is, the more it makes a case for the product or service under consideration. That means that the ability to write is becoming more and more important. To be in the game today, you have to become a publisher. A publisher of blogs, guides, tweets and the rest. It's an entirely new skill set for most people to learn, and it takes time and effort to master it, which will deter many from trying, or persisting. That's the bad news. But the good news is that once mastered a blog post, for example, can be repurposed and distributed very quickly and inexpensively in many different forms ranging from podcasts to video to tweets to tips and on and on and on. For many in business it represents an entirely new way of thinking. But it is an important skill for the future.

You are so right Misty. Kudos. :)

This is a great post, Robert.

Writing can be intimidating to those without a communcation background, but obviously in a world where the primary channels of communication and marketing are swiftly switching to social media and SEM, it’s a hugely important skill for people to develop.

I’ve actually got a three-part post tackling the idea of content creation on my blog (shameless link: <a

Last year I went into a little shop near my house that has these great headboards made from old doors. They didn't have exactly what I wanted so the woman was supposed to see when the guy was coming next and if he could bring one like that. She never called me.

I often tweet a link to your posts. In fact I have just done so with your latest post "Are you a Taco Stand" (Love that video by the way!).I guess you only have to think of the number of times you enquire about a product or service, and nobody ever follows up. It's all too common. Have you read this post, http://marketingwizdom.com/archives/312 "Why 8% of salespeople get 80% of the sales?"Robert

Tracy, great to get your comment, especially as I am a regular reader of your blog, and love what you say. I would have thought they'd know better!Tracy
